My project premise is simply this. If you are an artist living in or visiting the UK, I want to meet you. I want to hear about and understand your work, and then I want to take your portrait. That portrait will be for you to keep and use as you will, for free.
This is potentially going to keep me busy for the rest of my life! So… why?
First, I’d like to create a body of work that I can validly point at as a worthwhile legacy. Something that will last longer than I will. To me, I see the arts (and our traditional arts in particularly) as all too often forgotten, devalued by social media and increasingly just assumed and consumed, with no real thought to who created it, or why. I’d like my legacy to at least try to correct that.
Second, One of my big influences in photography is the work of Man Ray and Lee Miller. While Man Ray was living in Paris, he was a darling of the Surrealist set there and they all came to him for their portraits. Man Ray took their pictures in their thousands. On reading this and looking through that body of work, my first thought was ‘how cool is that, imagine meeting all those interesting people’. Now, at the time of writing in 2021 I’m 48… and increasingly aware that time is starting to slip away from me. So time to start making the most of whatever time I’ve got left, and meeting all those people if I’m ever going to.
Thirdly and lastly, I believe in networking - not the artificial kind that corporate America does (looking at you LinkedIn), but real networking, which is about actions. If I reach out to you and you have a good experience, then although not all of you will remember me the next time you need a photographer for hire, or buy me a tea through my Patreon, I’ll put my faith in human nature - enough of you will.
So I’m taking a chance on you, let’s see where it takes us.
